The Maltese Islands are known to be very religious – which explains why there are about 365 churches in this tiny archipelago, one for every day of the year!
The clocks on the bell towers of these churches are really special – that’s because many local churches have two clocks, set at different times!
This was done in the past so as to confuse the devil should he ever appear on earth as he wouldn’t know what the time actually is. However, generally only one clock is real as the other is often a very good likeness painted on the church.
Before watches were invented and when only the wealthy could afford to own a clock, the church clock was the only means of telling the time for many villagers, especially the farmers in the fields who only knew the time of day by the amount of chimes they heard from the local church.
